 On October 31, 1517, an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther nailed to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany his Ninety-Five Theses attacking the sale of indulgences (and other doctrinal differences) within the Roman Catholic Church.  This was an invitation to publicly debate the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and a statement by Luther against the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church.
