Pastor David’s Weekly Devotional
It has been said, “God made us in His image, and we’ve been trying to return the favor ever since.”  In his excellent and increasingly-relevant book, Ten Lies About God, Erwin Lutzer examines common misconceptions about God – ten contemporary ways man is trying to remake God:

1.   God is whatever you want Him to be
Biblical Truth: “Our God…does whatever pleases him” (Ps.115:3; cf. Ps. 50:21, 135:6; Is.55:8-9).

2.   Many paths lead into God’s presence
Biblical Truth: “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me’” (John 14:6; cf. Jn.3:16-18, 36; Acts 4:12; 1 Tim.2:5-6).

3.   God is more tolerant than He used to be
Biblical Truth: “I the Lord do not change…” (Mal.3:6; cf. Num.23:19; Ps.103:8-12; Jms.1:17).

4.   God has never personally suffered
Biblical Truth: “[Christ] took up our infirmities…carried our sorrows…was pierced for our transgressions…crushed for our iniquities…oppressed and afflicted” (Is.53:3-10; cf. 1Pet.2:23-24).

5.   God is obligated to save followers of other religions
Biblical Truth: “Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven” (Matt.7:21; cf. Rom.1:18-23).

6.   God takes no responsibility for natural disasters
Biblical Truth: “The Lord does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths.  He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses” (Ps.135:6-7; cf. Ps.89:8-9; Mk.4:35-41).

7.   God does not know our decisions before we make them
Biblical Truth: “I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come…” (Isa 46:10; cf. Ps.33:10-11, 139; Prov.19:21, 21:30; Rom.11:33-36; Heb.4:13).

8.   The Fall (of mankind) ruined God’s plan
Biblical Truth: “[God] has saved us and called us to a holy life – not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace…given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time” (2 Tim 1:9; cf. Acts 2:22-24, 3:18, 4:28; Eph.1:4, 7-10, 3:10-11; Tit.1:2).

9.   We must choose between God’s pleasures and our own
Biblical Truth: “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Ps.37:4; Ps.16:5-11; Jn.10:10, 17:3; Phil.4:4; 1Thess.5:16; 1Pet.1:8-9).

10. God helps those who help themselves.
Biblical Truth: “the sinful mind is hostile to God.  It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so” (Rom.8:7; cf. Rom.3:10-18, 4:4-5, 5:6-8; Eph.2:1-8; 2Tim.1:9; Tit.3:3-7).

Idolatry has existed since the fall (cf. Ex.20:3-6; Dan.5:23-24; Ps.115:4-8; Is.44:9-20; Jer.10:3-10; Acts 17:29).  Unfortunately, however, too many Christians become enamored with or deceived by a man-made god.  The God of the Bible will not be diminished, distorted, or defiled in any way – certainly not by those whom He has created.  This caveat rings with a sobering truth: “woe to those who see themselves in a mirror and proclaim that they have seen God.”

Together in and for Christ,
Pastor David
