As humans, we are hard-wired toward selfishness.  No one has to be taught how to be self-serving or self-centered; it comes to all of us quite naturally (we can even take pride in our humility).  As Christians, we are to mortify our pride and strive for Christlike humility.  “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves” (Phil.2:3; see Eph.4:2; Col.3:12).
